Starting with an architecture course can be stressful and frightening for freshers as they have to deal with lot of things to buy and plan before the course even starts.

So here we will provide a shopping list of things that we feel are most essential for first year architecture students.

Please kindly note that not all the products listed have to be bought once. You can build up your collection over the course.

If you feel we have left out any product, please tell us in the comments and we will cover that product in our next blog.

To summarize the Architect's Essentials List:

Essential Tools For First Year Architects:
  • A good sketch book
  • Note book
  • Drawing pens
  • Tape measure
  • Adjustable triangle
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Pens
  • Bluetooth earphones
  • Adjustable tubes /Container
  • Laptop

Essential Tools For First Year Architects Are:

  • A good sketch book

Sketching is the language in which we architects communicate.
Keeping a good sketch book handy will always benefit you towards
journaling and keeping your ideas in one place.

On the other hand it will benefit you with motivational quotes
and things that you like everything kept together.

  • Note books

You will require a good quality notebook for taking notes
from lectures and tutorials. Having a separate notebook
is a good idea to take down notes and not mixing it up with
your sketchbook.

Here is a nice and handy sketchbook that you can buy online.

  • Drawing pens

As first year Architecture students, one of the most essential
tools you'll need is a set of good quality drawing pens.
As sketching is the first thing that schools teach,
these are the tools you'll definitely need.

Other than sketching, you can use these pens for taking
notes as well as for your technical drawings.

  • Tape Measure

Tape measure prove to be essential when you're out for case
studies and data collection on site where you have to take
important measurements.

Site visits are going to be an everyday thing for you.So I
recommend you to invest in a good quality tape measure
which has a better and durable built quality and long lasting
measure marks.

  •  Adjustable triangles

These special kind of set squares can be adjusted to
whichever angle you want to draw isometrics, axonometrics
and much more.

Go for a much more durable and better quality adjustable
triangle so that it lasts for a longer time and help save you
some space as you wont need multiple set squares anymore.

  • Mechanical Pencil

Mechanical pencils are durable and long lasting as compared
to traditional pencils. They don't require a sharpener.

Having one in your bag and using it whenever necessary is a
good idea, you wont even have to look for sharpeners or blades.

  • Pens

As a Third Year Architecture student I suggest you to use the
same pen and same ink color for a longer time. The least
you can do is keep writing the whole journal with the
same type of pen and ink to maintain uniformity.

  • Bluetooth Earphones

Earphones can prove essential to you to listen to powerful
content and focus on work during noisy studio sessions.
A good wireless earphone is what you need to keep
enjoying what you listen and prevent all the hassle from
tangling wires in your drafting tools.

Here is a good quality earphone that you would like used
personally by me. I will surely cover this part in a separate
blog and provide you more choices.

  • Adjustable Tubes/Containers

These awesome adjustable enable you store your drawings
with least probability of damage. These tubes are available
in a variety of sizes which you can buy as per your requirement.

I'll cover this topic too in future where I will provide you with
multiple options to choose from.

  • Laptops
